Advocacy University

Welcome to Advocacy University, a resource provided by ID Action (Iowans with Disabilities in Action). We’re here to help you get the information you need to learn more about the challenges that face Iowans with disabilities and what you can do turn those challenges into opportunities.

Advocacy means speaking out about issues that you care about and offering your opinions and suggestions for improvement to the people who make decisions about change.  An effective advocate communicates and negotiates with decision-makers about their interests, needs, and your rights.

An effective advocate also speaks out to help others and to increase the public’s awareness of issues that affect people with disabilities.  They work to change rules and laws that they keep them from being included and sometimes they even become decision-makers themselves.

Whether you’ve been speaking up for a long time or are just beginning to find your voice, we want to help.  And we’ve put together a variety of resources to help you be the best advocate that you can be.
